EIRAS Joins EFFRA: Strengthening European Manufacturing Research and Innovation
Europe’s manufacturing transformation cannot be achieved by isolated technologies or isolated organisations. It requires shared priorities, interoperable solutions and a direct path from research to industrial use. EIRAS has therefore joined the European Factories of the Future Research Association (EFFRA), bringing its applied research perspective into a community that helps shape Europe’s manufacturing research and innovation agenda.
EFFRA represents the private side of the Made in Europe partnership under Horizon Europe. The partnership brings together industry, academia, research organisations, the European Commission and EU Member States to advance competitive, sustainable, resilient and human-centred manufacturing. For EIRAS, membership creates a valuable setting in which technical work, industrial needs and European strategy can inform one another.
From promising technology to deployable capability
European manufacturing has no shortage of ideas. The recurring challenge is turning them into capabilities that function across different machines, software environments, sites and value chains.
This is where EIRAS concentrates its work. Our research and innovation activities address the practical intersection of:
— Industrial AI and trustworthy decision support
— digital twins and lifecycle data
— Asset Administration Shells and semantic interoperability
— Digital Product Passports and circular value chains
— robotics, automation and human–machine collaboration
— resilient production systems that can adapt to disruption
Joining EFFRA allows EIRAS to connect these areas more closely with European roadmaps, collaborative projects and the experience of manufacturing organisations across the continent. It also gives us a stronger forum in which to contribute lessons from demonstrators and pilots—not only concepts developed on paper.
Interoperability is a strategic manufacturing issue
Many industrial initiatives still lose momentum at the interfaces: between engineering and production, between operational technology and IT, between one supplier and another, or between a pilot and a multi-site rollout. These are not secondary integration problems. They determine whether innovation scales.
EIRAS sees interoperability as both a technical and organisational discipline. Common information models, stable identities, clear access rules and traceable data flows make it possible to build solutions that remain useful beyond a single project. They also create the basis for more reliable AI, more actionable digital twins and more efficient compliance processes.
Within the EFFRA community, EIRAS intends to support approaches that combine open standards with practical validation under industrial conditions.
Manufacturing innovation must remain human-centred
Productivity matters, but it is not the only measure of industrial progress. New systems must also support people, reduce avoidable complexity, make decisions understandable and improve the ability of organisations to respond to change.
This position is consistent with the European Industry 5.0 perspective, in which human-centricity, sustainability and resilience complement competitiveness. For EIRAS, these are engineering criteria. They influence how an automation concept is designed, which data an AI system may use, how operators remain in control and how a production system recovers when normal assumptions no longer hold.
A platform for joint action
EFFRA membership is not an end in itself. Its value will be measured through collaboration: identifying relevant industrial challenges, building strong consortia, translating research into demonstrators and validating solutions with companies.
EIRAS looks forward to contributing an independent Swiss and European perspective, a strong applied research orientation and a commitment to open, transferable knowledge.
